Stephen Hawking
Stephen William Hawking was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who was director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge at the time of his death. He was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge between 1979 and 2009.
Hawking was born in Oxford into a family of doctors. Hawking began his university education at University College, Oxford in October 1959 at the age of 17, where he received a first-class BA (Hons.) degree in physics. He began his graduate work at Trinity Hall, Cambridge in October 1962, where he obtained his PhD degree in applied mathematics and theoretical physics, specializing in general relativity and cosmology in March 1966.
In 1963, Hawking was diagnosed with an early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease that gradually paralyzed him over the decades. After the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speech-generating device.
Hawking’s scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He was a vigorous supporter of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.
Hawking achieved commercial success with several works of popular science in which he discussed his theories and cosmology in general. His book A Brief History of Time appeared on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. Hawking was a Fellow of the Royal Society, a lifetime member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States.
In 2002, Hawking was ranked number 25 in the BBC’s poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. He died on 14 March 2018 at the age of 76, after living with motor neurone disease for more than 50 years.

Stephen has Capricorn Lagna inShravana Nakshatra. As per classic Hora Sara:The native of Shravan Nakshatra will have knowledge of Vedas (or be proficient in Pure Knowledge) will live in foreign countries, will have an exalted wife, be wealthy and famous, will have few sons, many enemies, be troubled by several expenses, be a lord and be happy.
Lagna has two benefic planets Venus and Mercury. As ninth and tenth lord in lagna they are making dharmkarmadhipati yoga. Venus is yogkaraka for Capricorn lagna. This yoga is somewhat spoilt by the aspect of debilitated Saturn and retrograde Jupiter who is a malefic for Capricorn lagna.
The dharmtrikona (1-5-9) houses has benefic planets Venus, Jupiter and Moon which is very good combination for learning. Rahu in the eighth house promotes research.
Reason for debilitating disease
- Lagna lord Saturn is debilitated in the 4th house and is conjunct with Mars. The debilitating bodily disease is clearly visible.
- The debilitated Saturn is also the AtmaKarak. As per the research by Dadwal sir, Saturn debilitation impacts Capricorn the most. Here Capricorn is the lagna and his body suffered.
- Lagna is also in Pap kartari between two malefics.
- From Moon as Lagna, Lagna lord Mercury is aspected by debilitated Saturn who is the 6th lord. This aspect of Saturn is more lethal as it is conjunct with Mars the 8th lord. Eighth house from Moon has Saturn and Mars.
Choice of Subject
He was a mathematician – Malefic influence on Mercury and fifth lord gives fondness for mathematics. Mercury and Venus are conjunct in lagna, Mercury is digbali and is aspected by Saturn and Jupiter. He also did philosophy as a subject which is due to the connection of Jupiter in fifth house and aspecting fifth lord and ninth lord.
Undergraduate and Graduate Years
Hawking began his university education at University College, Oxford, in October 1959 at the age of 17. After receiving a first-class BA (Hons.) degree in physics, he began his graduate work at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, in October 1962. He started his research on Cosmology and general relativity in Cambridge.
Rahu Maha dasha
The dasha of Rahu started in January 1963 and this dasha would make him do pioneering work and make him a world-renowned physicist. Rahu is placed in the 8th house of research and is not aspected by any planet. Rahu is placed in the 5th house of Kalpurush which is the house of studies and made him do original work in his field.
He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease around the same time. We have seen the inherent weakness of his lagna and here dasha lord Rahu is placed in the eighth house. While it would be good for brilliant analysis, it would not be good for his health.
- Rahu’s dispositor Sun is placed in the twelfth house of expenditure. The connection of eighth and twelfth lord with Rahu started the life long illness which would make him spend the next 50 years of his life on a wheel chair.
- From Moon, Rahu is again placed in the twelfth house. In D-9, Rahu is placed in the seventh house and his dispositor Venus is debilitated and placed in the sixth house of disease.
- Rahu is placed in Leo the fifth house of Kalpurush, it showed the results of his previous lives manifesting during the dasha.
Marriage
Stephen married Jane Wild at the start of Rahu dasha on 14th July 1965. Dasha running was Rahu-Rahu-Moon. Rahu is an unconditional giver of marriage and Moon is the seventh lord. Rahu is placed in the seventh house in D -9.
By that time his poor physical condition and ailment was known but Jane, an arts student decided to go ahead with the marriage. The seventh house has gone to the ninth house of luck. She went on to nurse him for coming 25 years and was responsible for his survival in spite of severe disabilities. From Rahu as Lagna, seventh lord is debilitated in the ninth house and she nursed him as a dutiful provider during this time.
In 1966 he completed his doctorate and was awarded fellowship at Cambridge. Dasha running was Rahu – Jupiter. We have seen about Rahu; Jupiter is placed in the fifth house of studies that made him excel in studies. Rahu and Jupiter are 4-10 from each other. He continued to work on the theory of Black holes.
Rahu -Saturn dasha started from 1968-1971 and the period was professionally frustrating for him with no significant achievements.
Hawking presented his research in 1974 which showed that black holes emit radiationwhich may continue until they exhaust their energy and evaporate. The discovery was widely accepted as a significant breakthrough in theoretical physics and is known today as Hawking radiation. Dasha running was Rahu-Venus. His most significant researches and recognition came during the dasha of Rahu-Venus which continued from August 1974-1977.
In 1974 the Royal Society elected him one of its youngest fellows. In 1975, he was awarded both the Eddington Medal and the Pius XI Gold Medal, and in 1976 the Dannie Heineman Prize, the Maxwell Medal and Prize and the Hughes Medal. He was appointed a professor with a chair in gravitational physics in 1977 The following year he received the Albert Einstein Medal and an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford. He became professor of gravitational physics at Cambridge in 1977, and in 1979 he was appointed to Cambridge’s Lucasian professorship of mathematics, a post once held by Isaac Newton.
He continued to get recognition for his work in the antar dashas of Sun and Moon. The mid to late 1970s were a period of growing public interest in black holes and the physicists who were studying them. Hawking was regularly interviewed for print and television. He also received increasing academic recognition of his work.
Jupiter Mahadasha
As Jupiter Mahadasha started coming nearer, his approach to physics started becoming more intuitive and speculative rather than insisting on mathematical proofs. Jupiter leads to a leaning towards philosophizing. Jupiter Mahadasha started in January 1981. Jupiter is the third lord placed in the fifth house. It gave him the impetus to write publish several papers and write books.
To finance his children’s education and home expenses, he decided in 1982 to write a popular book about the universe that would be accessible to the general public. Instead of publishing with an academic press, he signed a contract with Bantam Books, a mass market publisher, and received a large advance for his book. A first draft of the book, called A Brief History of Time, was completed in 1984.
He was seriously sick in 1985 and lost his ability to speak. Dasha running was Jupiter – Saturn. Debilitated lagna lord Saturn had to give him troubles during the dasha.
After many iterations, the book was published in April 1988 in the US and in June in the UK, and it proved to be an extraordinary success, rising quickly to the top of best-seller lists in both countries and remaining there for months. The book was translated into many languages, and ultimately sold an estimated 9 million copies. Dasha running was Jupiter – Ketu and Jupiter- Venus. Jupiter is the natural significator of wealth. Ketu is placed in the second house of wealth and Venus is the Yog karak planet for Capricorn lagna placed in lagna. He received further academic recognition, including five more honorary degrees.
Also during the dasha of Jupiter- Venus, Nurse Elane Mason was hired to assist him. She went on to become a dominant force in his life and Stephen became romantically involved with her. In February 1990 he left his wife and children to live with Nurse Mason. Dasha running was Jupiter-Venus- Rahu.
Jupiter – Venus is a tricky dasha and brings substantial ups and down in one’s life. Rahu in the eight house gave affairs. Its placed in the seventh house in D-9.
- To have extra marital affairs, first the second house of value systems of a person is seen. In case of Stephen, second lord is debilitated and conjunct with Mars. Second house is in Rahu -Ketu axis.
- Mars the lord of eleventh house is aspecting the seventh house. Eleventh house is the house of affairs.
- Seventh lord Moon is placed in the ninth house and is aspected by Jupiter.
- Seventh lord is placed in dual sign in D-1 and in D-9.
Antar dasha lord Venus is the fifth lord of emotions and Rahu is placed in the eight house of affairs. This caused considerable scandal at that time.
After his divorce from Jane in 1995, Hawking married Mason in September. Dasha running was Jupiter- Rahu – Mercury. Mercury is the lord of ninth house which is seen for second marriage.
Saturn Mahadasha
The Saturn Mahadasha started in January 1997. Saturn is the debilitated lagna lord placed with Mars. While he continued to have success and acclaim during the dasha as Saturn is conjunct with eleventh lord Mars and aspecting the 10th house, the debilitated Saturn also has to give him humiliation at a personal level.
During the Rahu and Jupiter mahadasha, he was well looked after by his wife Jane. The divorce came through before the start of Saturn maha dasha and now Mason was incharge of looking after Stephen. Allegations dogged their marriage and a number of people accused Elaine of ‘bullying’ Stephen. Hawking sustained multiple mysterious injuries over a period of several years during their marriage.
Hawking continued his writings for a popular audience, publishing The Universe in a Nutshell in 2001.
Saturn – Venus dasha
By 2003, consensus among physicists was growing that Hawking was wrong about the loss of information in a black hole. Dasha running was Saturn- Venus and his earlier work on black holes was discredited during this time.
Further tension came in 2003 after Hawking’s nurses accused his second wife Mason of physically abusing Hawking and reported the incident to police. The police investigation was called off after Hawking denied the allegations.
After 11 years of marriage, Mason filed for divorce in 2006 during Saturn – Venus. After their divorce, Hawking resumed closer relationships with Jane, his children, and his grandchildren.
Hawking continued to travel widely to various countries to give lectures and received various awards. However, no new works was done by him.
He died on 14 March 2018 at the age of 76, after living with motor neurone disease for more than 50 years. This way Stephen played the cards dealt to him by destiny rather well and made a mark in this world.
Note:
His most notable work on Black hole radiation, also called the Hawking radiation was done during the dasha of Rahu – Venus. In the case of famous scientist Albert Einstein, the most notable work came in the dasha of Venus- Rahu. Similarly, in the case of author Bhagwati Charan Varma, his most famous work was produced in the dasha of Venus – Rahu. Rahu, Venus have been seen as the ignitors of creativity in a persons life.
